Should Fat People Be Penalized?
Being overweight could be costing you with poorer health but now it could also leave you poorer in the pocket.
Health insurance companies are now considering charging overweight and obese people more for their health insurance compared to their slimmer counterparts.
For these 2 reasons.
1 – Overweight people tend to suffer from health problems like diabetes because of their weight.
2 – They believe that weight problems can be avoided if people took up healthier eating habits and took part in some form of exercise.
As well as insurance companies targeting overweight people some companies are moving towards this model also.
“Safeway” has kept its insurance rates down over the past 4 years by rewarding slim people for keeping in shape. If you’re slim and don’t smoke you can expect to pay a lot less for your insurance that your overweight colleagues.
The CEO Steven A Burd believe that if this system were rolled out county wide since 2004 it could have saved the US tax payer up to $600 million dollars.
With Governments looking at any way to reduce their expenses since the recession years it look like idea like this may take hold. It seem to be that the more it pays out, the more results it will demand from its people.
So should we penalize people for being overweight and are they a “dead weight” thats slowly bringing down the health systems of the world and costing thin people more in tax dollars to support them?
It may make a difference for some people but I wonder it if can legally hold up in court, or could it be challenged with discrimination laws against obese people.
Should fat people be charged more for laziness and overeating?
And would paying more for health insurance be an incentive for you to lose weight?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
