Is This Why You’re Fat?
When most of consider where we’re going wrong with weight gain we usually put it down to eating the wrong types of foods, eating late at night, etc.
But I wonder have you ever given any consideration to how you eat your food?
Basically are you a fast eater or a slow eater?
You’re probably wondering how this could be making a difference to your weight.
But researchers in Athens, Greece found a connection between the speed you eat your food and how full you feel afterwards.
Dr Kokkinos and his team at Laiko General Hospital in Athens, Greece, had 17 volunteers eat a test meal of 300ml of ice cream at different rates.
They found that the people who took longer to eat their portion of ice cream up to the full 30 minutes, had higher concentrations of the hormones PYY and GLP-1 in their blood samples.
(These hormones PYY and GLP-1 are made in the gut and gives feelings of fullness and feeling satisfied.)
From their findings Dr Kokkinos believes that modern living of fast foods and rushing our meals has lead to the weight problems we now see in society. By slowing down and tasting our food rather than wolfing it down can help the brain to step in an tell us that its time to stop eating and push our plates away.
Maybe we should have heeded our parents a bit better when we were kids, when they said not to wolf your food down at mealtimes.
It may sound like a simple thing but give it a try over the next couple of days and see how you get on, I’d love to hear your results.
