calorie countYou be forgiven to think that with all the talk about calorie counting that we’d all be experts on how much we could eat safely every day, and that we’d never have to cope with obesity.

But with the increasing obesity rates worldwide prove either

1 – We don’t know what we’re doing, with portion size or how many calories are in certain foods.

2 – We don’t care and just blindly eat everything.

If you’re in either of those situations this post might not be targeted for you.

But for the others out there that has some form of a grip on the calorie  notion  you could be in for a surprise.

The “Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition” in the UK believe that current thinking on calorie counts for men and women are out of date and need to be updated.

I know what you’re thinking, surely they need to be lowered right?

Wrong!

The committee believe that the daily amounts should be increased by 400 calories.

Happy days!

But there’s sting in the tail. They believe that while calories could be increased they should only be done so, if the person in question is doing enough exercise to burn them off.

Personally, I believe this is as crazy and wacky a notion as increasing the drink driving limit for drivers and allowing more drunk drivers on the road.

Common sense would  tell you that the majority  of people can’t or won’t control their daily calorie levels and that why we’re in the situation we’re in.

While manufacturers of food have gone some way in putting calorie counts on the side of packaging the majority of food labels are still misleading and confusing.

If you’d like to see why you can read my post on “Understanding Food Labels” here.

What are your thoughts should calorie counts be raised or is it asking for more trouble.

I’d love to here you thoughts…
