Which Is Better For Weight Loss – High-Protein Or High-Carb?
The debate of which diet is better for weight loss will run and run even after this article has been written, with people on both sides claiming one is better than the other.
But a new year long study in Australia has revealed that a high carb rather than high protein could be the best way to go but not because of its weight loss benefits.
The Australian researchers found that both diets worked equally well when it came to shedding kilos, but those on the low-carb diet were in considerably worse moods
In the study of 106 overweight and obese people aged between 24 – 64 had to follow either a low carb or high carb diet for a year. The low carb diet was made up of plenty of high protein products like dairy and meat while the high carb dieters relied more on bread pasta and rice.
Over the year the dieters had their weight loss recorded at different intervals and their emotional state was also taken note of.
After the years trial was up both groups weight loss was around the same amount 13.7kg but a surprising change was noted in moods and attitudes in the low carb group. While they initially started off with the same feelings of being less angry, less depressed and less confused after 8 weeks, things changed after that.
While the high carb dieters stayed in a up beat and improved mood the low carb dieters returned to their original mood.
The researchers think that this may come about for either of these 2 reasons…
- That its hard to stick to a low carb diet when you’re constantly surronded by high carb foods.
- That low carb dieting make affect the chemicals in the brain and lead to lower levels of serotonin being produced. (Low serotonin levels are linked to depression).
But they added that although low carb diets may affect serotonin levels taking up some form of exercise could help to undo this by bringing them up.
So, for all of you out there who find yourself losing weight and still being unhappy it may be that your diet is affecting more than just your waistline.
